My heart belongs to Spay Panama

I first found out about Spay Panama last summer when traveling there to teach English and tutor Spanish.  Jennifer, our Saboga hostess had moved to the island seven years prior.  She is a softy for animals like me.  After her first trip into the village, where she saw hoards of sick cats and dogs, she decided that either she was never going into town again, or she was going to help care for the animals.  Not going into the village was not an option, so she became obsessed with saving suffering animals.  With the help of Spay Panama,  she organized for hundreds of cats and dogs to be spayed and neutered.  Unfortunately, many animals also had to be euthanized because they were just too sick.

Today, I was lucky enough to get to meet with Patricia Chan, the director of Spay Panama, so that I could plan a CSN volunteer trip for February.  The trip will be open to students who intend to veterinarians or doctors who are interested in animals and volunteerism.

Spay Panama hosts two clinics per week in Panama City where they treat around 100 animals per day.  They also do one mobile clinic per week where they take a bus to underprivileged areas.  They are not-for-profit and function by donations and volunteers.  I look forward to CSN being a part of this amazing organization.
